Rep. Doug Collins is quietly laying the groundwork running for House Judiciary chairman buy, buttonholing colleagues they like panel chairs and showcasing his legislative acumen.
The conservative Georgia Republican is a first to officially jump in to the powerful post, that will be open with the retirement of Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) at the end of the year. Collins has notified leadership of his intention to own, and he’s going public regarding his sales hype.

While Collins is not really next in line in seniority to the panel, the functional variety of departures around the committee and his awesome close ties to GOP leaders give Collins a powerful shot on the job, according to senior Republican sources.
“The nicest thing I will offers are my work ethic and then to be sure that we’re legislative while we’re here,” Collins said in a recent interview. “I think the problem we’ve got to cope with is: How should we attain the art of finding legislation which helps people and moving it forward? Rep. Raúl Labrador, an ancient immigration attorney who sits around the committee, is leaving Congress to operate for Idaho governor. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin, the best senior lawmaker after Goodlatte, has held the gavel.
Collins could face some competition from Ohio Rep. Steve Chabot, that’s far more senior than Collins. As Judiciary chairman, Collins said his approach would be to move legislation that could pass, not loose time waiting for perfection. Here’s an example: His criminal justice reform bill.
