Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) will resign within the Senate on April 1, his office announced Monday, triggering an additional Senate election in Mississippi this fall and reshaping the leadership of a of Congress’ biggest committees.
“I regret my health has become a continuous challenge,” Cochran said in a very statement released on Monday afternoon. Cochran functions as chairman in the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Mississippi GOP Gov. Phil Bryant will select Cochran’s replacement, who can contain the seat up until the special election.
